Tree Trimming & Pruning

Expert Pruning to Keep Your Trees Healthy and Safe

Trees have long been considered one of the most valuable assets on any property, adding beauty, shade, and real monetary value to your home or business. In an urban setting, investing in the health of your trees on a regular basis allows them to thrive and provide enjoyment for you and future generations. But a tree that goes uncared for, especially one growing close to your home, is essentially left to its own devices. And that’s where problems begin.

Improper pruning can weaken a tree’s branch structure, cause cuts that don’t heal properly, and encourage the growth of suckers that divert energy from the parts of the tree that need it most. That’s why professional pruning by a certified arborist matters.

Pruning to Prevent Cavities and Decay

Throughout the year, dead or damaged limbs caused by natural aging, stress, severe weather, or pest attack can drop without warning. When a limb tears away, the wound left behind can develop decay that spreads faster than the tree’s natural healing process can contain it. Some types of decay and pathogens target the heartwood of the tree and aren’t visually detectable from the outside.

Making proper pruning cuts on potentially problematic limbs before they break significantly reduces the chance of cavities forming. This preventive approach protects the long-term structural integrity of the tree and helps avoid more costly interventions down the road.

Let There Be Light: Improving Canopy Health

When the internal structure of a tree becomes crowded with small twigs and secondary growth sprouting from the major limbs, problems develop. Over time, these inner branches grow larger and more prolific, effectively clogging the interior of the canopy. The result is a crown that is heavier, denser, and more prone to structural failure.

A congested canopy also blocks adequate airflow and sunlight from reaching the interior leaves, which are the tree’s food factories. The tree has to spend energy maintaining these inefficient branches instead of directing that energy where it’s needed most. In some cases, the appearance of these interior sprouts (called epicormic growth) is a sign that your tree is already under stress.

Reducing the Wind Sail Effect

Proper thinning and cleaning of the crown has a critical safety benefit beyond just tree health. In severe weather, a dense, uncleaned canopy acts like a sail, catching wind and placing enormous stress on the trunk and root system. This increases the risk of the tree uprooting or snapping during storms.

In a properly maintained crown, wind can pass through the branches more freely, dramatically reducing the forces acting on the tree. For Louisiana homeowners who deal with hurricanes and tropical storms, this kind of preventive pruning can be the difference between a tree that stands and one that ends up on your roof.

Pruning Tailored to Your Goals

When considering pruning, think about what you want to achieve. Maybe you need to raise the height of the canopy so it no longer hangs over passing vehicles or pedestrians. Maybe you have large limbs extending over your roof that concern you during storm season. Or maybe your trees simply need routine maintenance to stay healthy and look their best.

Our experienced team will work with you to understand your goals and develop a pruning plan that meets your needs while staying within your budget.

Our pruning services include:

R
Crown cleaning to remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches
R
Crown thinning to reduce weight and improve airflow
R
Crown raising for clearance over walkways, driveways, and structures
R
Hazard limb removal
R
Structural pruning for younger trees to promote long-term health

No Hidden Extras

All of our pruning prices include hauling away every piece of debris created by the job. If you prefer to keep the material on site, just let us know. Need firewood for your home or camp?
Let our sales team know before the job begins, and our chainsaw crew will gladly cut a portion of your tree debris into firewood-sized logs. It’s just one more way we take care of our customers.
Correct pruning is one of the best investments you can make in your trees. They’ll thank you for it in many ways.

Crane Operations

Crane-Assisted Tree Removal for Complex and High-Risk Jobs

Some trees can’t be safely removed using traditional climbing and rigging methods alone. When a tree is exceptionally large, located near a structure, tangled in power lines, or in a spot with limited ground access, crane-assisted removal is the safest and most efficient solution.

Possum’s Tree Service has invested in crane capabilities specifically for these high-risk situations. Our crew uses the crane to lift sections of the tree in a controlled manner, lowering each piece to a safe landing zone rather than relying on gravity and rope work alone. This reduces risk to your property, your home, and our team.

When crane removal is the right choice:

R
Large trees near homes, garages, or fences
R
Trees in tight spaces with no clear drop zone
R
Trees entangled with utility lines
R
Storm-damaged trees that are unstable or leaning
R
Situations where speed and precision are critical
Crane operations require careful planning, skilled operators, and close coordination between the ground crew and the crane operator. Our team has the training and experience to execute these jobs safely, protecting both your property and the surrounding area.

Stump Grinding & Removal

Complete Stump Elimination for a Clean, Safe Property

After a tree has been removed, the stump left behind is more than just an eyesore. Old stumps are a safety hazard, a magnet for termites and harmful fungus, and a constant source of frustration when you’re trying to mow or maintain your yard. Letting Possum’s Tree Service remove your stumps is quick, always reasonably priced, and makes an immediate difference in the look and safety of your property.

We also offer Surface Grinding when utilities are present near stump, leaving stump ground level.

How Stump Grinding Works

We use professional-grade stump grinders to eliminate stumps below ground level. These are large, powerful machines, but our smallest unit will fit through most garden gateways (as narrow as 36 inches), so we can reach stumps in tight backyard spaces that other companies might struggle with.

The grinding process turns your stump into wood chip mulch. You have two options: let the mulch decompose naturally in the hole where the stump was, or we can haul it away for a small additional service fee. Either way, where there was once an ugly stump, you’ll have level ground ready for whatever you want to do with the space.

Why You Should Remove Old Stumps

R
Safety
Stumps are a tripping hazard and can cause damage to mowers and other equipment
R
Pests
Old stumps attract termites, carpenter ants, and other wood-boring insects that can eventually spread to your home
R
Fungus
Decaying stumps can harbor harmful fungal growth that may spread to nearby healthy trees
R
Curb appeal
Stumps detract from an otherwise well-maintained landscape and reduce property value
R
Usable space
Removing stumps opens up your yard for new landscaping, structures, or simply more room to enjoy

Tree Health Assessment

Professional Evaluation by Certified Arborists

Not every tree problem is obvious. Some of the most dangerous conditions, like internal decay, root failure, and structural weakness, develop slowly and are difficult to spot without professional training. A tree that looks healthy from the outside can still be at risk of sudden failure.

Our certified arborists provide thorough tree health assessments to evaluate the condition of your trees and identify potential risks before they become emergencies. This is especially valuable for mature trees near your home, trees that have been through recent storms, or any tree that looks like it might be declining.

A tree health assessment includes:

R
Visual inspection of trunk, canopy, and root zone
R
Evaluation of structural integrity and lean
R
Identification of disease, pest activity, or decay
R
Risk evaluation based on proximity to structures and traffic areas
R
Recommendations for treatment, pruning, support, or removal

Some species of trees common in Louisiana are more susceptible to severe weather damage than others. An assessment can help you understand which trees on your property might need attention before the next hurricane season. It can also identify trees that would benefit from pruning, cabling, or fertilization to improve their health and longevity.

Tree & Shrub Fertilization

Tree Healthcare and Preservation Through Professional Nutrient Management

Is a tree on your property looking a little under the weather? There’s a good chance it’s not getting the nutrients it needs from the soil it lives in. In urban and suburban settings, trees don’t have the benefit of the natural nutrient cycling that occurs in a forest, where fallen leaves and organic matter continuously replenish the soil. That’s where professional fertilization comes in.

Possum’s Tree Service prides itself on performing all fertilizer applications according to ANSI A300 Best Management Practices for Tree and Shrub Fertilization. Done correctly and often in combination with pruning, fertilization can breathe new life and vigor into a stressed tree or shrub. Done incorrectly, under-application can result in little or no improvement to tree health, while over-application can have lethal effects on the tree and be harmful to our environment.

Science-Based Diagnosis, Not Guesswork

Without exception, all fertilizer applications are performed only after we determine the specific nutrient needs of your tree or shrub. We do this by analyzing soil core and foliar samples to check the quantities of minerals and elements present. This diagnostic approach ensures we understand exactly what your tree is lacking before we prescribe any treatment.

No more “hit or miss” generic fertilizing. Whether it’s spreading, spraying, or injecting, Possum’s Tree Service calculates the most appropriate fertilizer delivery method and rate of application to give your tree precisely what it needs to flourish. Every prescription is customized to the individual tree, the soil conditions, and the results you want to achieve.

When Your Trees Need Professional Fertilization

R
Trees showing signs of chlorosis, sparse canopy, or stunted growth
R
Nutrient-depleted soil in established urban or suburban landscapes
R
Newly planted trees that need a strong nutritional start
R
Mature trees recovering from storm damage, heavy pruning, or pest stress
R
Shrubs and ornamental plantings that need targeted care

A Full-Service, Customized Feeding Solution

Healthy trees are more resilient trees. Proper fertilization strengthens root systems, improves canopy density, and helps trees better withstand the storms and pests that come with living in Louisiana. Possum’s Tree Service is pleased to offer your trees the full-service, customized feeding solution that’s just right for their specific needs.

Root Barriers

Biobarrier® Root Control Systems: Protect Your Foundation Without Losing Your Trees

When Tree Roots Threaten Your Structures

Developers and architects have long considered trees a potential threat to their work, and for good reason. The root system of a mature tree has the ability to undermine manmade structures by invading and displacing the supporting soil beneath cement slabs, foundations, roads, and sidewalks. This leads to cracking, settling, and structural instability. The roots of a mature tree can absorb hundreds of gallons of water per day from the surrounding soil, and that moisture displacement can cause significant movement over time.

In the past, the most common solution was simply to remove as many trees from the construction site as possible. But that approach sacrifices valuable shade, energy savings, aesthetic appeal, and property value. Today, there’s a better way.

How Biobarrier® Works

By installing Biobarrier® root control systems from Fiberweb™, it is now possible to guarantee the protection of both new and established buildings from invading root systems while allowing nearby valuable trees and shrubs to continue thriving.

Biobarrier® works differently from traditional rigid or synthetic plastic barriers that seal off and smother the root system. It is a bio-textile fabric that allows moisture and nutrients to pass freely through the material while using a unique chemical compound that inhibits root growth within one to two inches of the barrier. Roots are redirected away from your structures without being cut off from the water and nutrients they need to survive.

Pre-Construction or Retrofit Installation

Whether you’re a homeowner who needs a retrofit to protect an existing structure or a developer who sees the value of preserving established native trees in a new construction project, Biobarrier® root control systems bring balance to both environments.

Root barriers are the right solution for:

R
Homeowners experiencing foundation cracking, slab movement, or sidewalk lifting near established trees
R
New construction projects that want to preserve valuable trees on site rather than clear-cutting the lot
R
Developers and architects looking to include established native trees in their building plans for added property value
R
Commercial properties needing long-term, low-maintenance root management
R
Properties with driveways, sidewalks, or roads being compromised by aggressive root systems

A Proven, Warranted Solution

Biobarrier® installations are the most cost-effective and proven method of protecting both your “green” and “gray” investments. Every installation comes with a written 15-year warranty, giving you long-term peace of mind. Already trusted by several of Acadiana’s property developers, this technology brings harmonization to the needs of both the built environment and the natural landscape.
